What Does Specialty Grade Actually Mean?
Specialty grade coffee is the top tier of the coffee quality scale, scored by licensed Q Graders on a 100-point system. A coffee must score 80 or above to earn the specialty designation. Most supermarket coffee scores in the 50–60 range — technically "commercial grade," grown for volume, not flavor.
Specialty grade beans come from specific farms or regions, grown at higher altitudes, harvested by hand, and processed with care. Every step matters, because any shortcut shows up in your cup.
Why It Tastes Different
Commercial coffee blends beans from dozens of origins to produce a consistent, neutral flavor. Specialty coffee does the opposite — it celebrates what makes each origin unique. A single origin coffee from Ethiopia might taste like blueberries and jasmine. One from Colombia might taste like caramel and citrus. These aren't added flavors — they come from the soil, altitude, and processing method.
Specialty grade also means fewer defects. Green beans are inspected for insect damage, mold, and inconsistent sizing before roasting. Commercial coffee lets defects through — and they contribute to the bitter aftertaste many people associate with bad coffee.

How to Find Specialty Grade Coffee
Look for bags that list the origin, the roast date (not the "best by" date), and the processing method. If none of that information is on the bag, it's probably not specialty grade.
