Organic Guatemala Reserve

A full-bodied medium-dark roast, deep and creamy, with chocolate and nut notes and a vibrant acidity — grown by the women of ASOBAGRI's Café de Mujeres program.

This coffee comes from Asociación Barillense de Agricultores (ASOBAGRI), a Fair Trade certified cooperative in Guatemala. The rugged terrain of the area has preserved the indigenous heritage, distinct clothing, and dialects that can vary from one mountain ridge to the next. ASOBAGRI has become an important bridge between these local coffee farmers and the international specialty coffee community. The cooperative has over 1,400 members spread across 80 communities, who cultivate and harvest their own coffee on small farms with their own micro-mills, and it is committed to promoting gender equality throughout the organization.

This lot, called Café de Mujeres (Las Dueñas Café), is the culmination of an integrated program for 182 female members of ASOBAGRI. It includes five women technicians providing training and technical support tailored to the members' needs. Strategies like using coffee pulp to make organic fertilizer cut the transport costs of buying fertilizer from afar and create an abundant source of plant nutrition, which means better yields and better quality. Income diversification into chicken farms, avocado trees and a local cafeteria has further strengthened the options available to women members.
